The protection that I have received from Your
Excellency will be remembered with deep gratitude.
I have at present something very startling
which I wish to bring before Your Excellency's notice. I have heard
that Sün Man is raising a rebellion in Wai Chau in which he has in-
sinuated that I am concerned, so that both Chinese and foreigners
are startled and surprised. I grieve over this very much indeed.
Now I know that Sün Man, 5 years ago, created
a disturbance in Canton ostensibly for the object of the overthrow of
the Manchu Government. My ancestors on the contrary have served this
Government for generations, whilst I myself have received unexampled favours from the present Emperor in connection with the carrying out of reform. After the coup d'étât I was again the one secretly command- ed by the Emperor to seek assistance to rescue him.
I therefore proclaimed this abroad and organ-
ised the Po Wong party (1.e. party for protecting the Emperor). My book, entitled "The History of Reform, in the year of Mo Sut", has had the honour of being read by Mr. Lockhart, the Colonial Secretary. All my views and experiences have been recorded and may be seen in that book. Such views are absolutely at variance with those of Sün Man. This is known throughout the world,
Sun Man seeing that the people abroad are ad- hering to my policy of loyalty and fidelity, and that, notwithstanding his repeated attempts year after year to have an interview with me,I have rejected him, has grown very jealous of me.
